Castroville Artichokes

artichokesArtichokes are available year round with peak season running March through May and a second crop occurring in the early fall. California produces 100% of all commercially grown 'Globe' artichokes in the United States from the Central Coast region in fields surrounding the towns of Salinas, Castroville and Monterey.

Produce Costs

As you may have noticed, the costs of meats and seafood as well as dairy products have risen considerably since this time last year. The cost of produce staples, while very vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, has actually decreased by a whopping 39% over the same period last year. We analyzed 20 of the most commonly used items, the items that actually drive the market, like avocados, strawberries, melons, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuces, bell peppers, Italian squash, tomatoes, onions and potatoes. These items are down in prices significantly from last year. The most dramatic cost difference is in Italian squash which cost more than $48/cs. in March of 2011, opposed to $15/cs in March of 2012. The primary reason for the decrease in costs is due to recent favorable, dry, warm, sunny, weather in the winter growing regions of Southern California and Mexico. Fortunately, we have not experienced the typical heavy rainfall and cold freezing weather that causes shortages and gaps in our produce staples and we have been able to keep the costs down and pass the savings to our customers.
