PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

TOYBOX SUMMER SQUASH

We are now receiving several varieties of summer squashes from Castaneda Brothers produce, located in Green Valley, a few miles past Fairfield in Solano County. Summer squashes are warm season vegetables picked young, before the rind hardens. There are many varieties ranging in size from bite-sized to baseball bats. The most common variety is the familiar Italian squash, known to us as Zucchini.

We will use four varieties to assemble our Toybox Summer Squash pack:

  • Sunburst Squash- Bright yellow, round with scalloped edge and bell-shaped. Sunburst is best in flavor when still on the small side and may be served whole when roasted or sliced for sauté.
  • Gold Bar Squash- Similar in size to zucchini with bright yellow skin and white flesh. Fewer internal seeds results in a sturdy squash perfect for grilling.
  • Summer Squash- A ‘pattypan' variety, pale green in color, wider and flatter than Sunburst.
  • Ronde de Nice- Dark green in color, round in shape-often called ‘eight ball'. Mixes well with Summer and Sunburst squashes for colorful sautés.

Toybox Summer Squash- 20# - $20.75
