APPLES

This week we are offering varietal apples from Larsen Apple Farm, one of the many growers located in the area known as Apple Hill in Camino, El Dorado . The Apple Hill Growers Association is comprised of more than 50 independently owned ranches offering a variety of locally grown mountain fruit. Additional businesses in the area include Christmas tree farms, several wineries, a micro brewery and several restaurants. Most of the Apple growers offer a variety of homemade pie and other desserts featuring their fruit. Larsen Apple Barn is the oldest (1860) family owned and operated farm in the area. Larsen offers over a dozen varieties of apples as well as pears, peaches and nectarines seasonally, along with fresh apple cider, honey and pumpkins.

Apple Hill apples are seasonal, the harvest running from late summer and throughout the fall season. They are very fresh and have great flavor. The following varieties are available this week. Other varieties will follow as they become available.

•  Golden Delicious- An old classic apple, slightly sweet, crisp and juicy. A good apple for baking as the natural sugar content adds great flavor to the finished products. Good for eating raw in salads; holds shape well when cooked in tarts and compotes and make great apple sauce. $20.75 per case.
•  Granny Smith- All purpose cooking apple, tart and juicy, crisp white flesh . $18.75 per case.
•  Pippin- An old world English apple with a unique flavor, slightly tart and sweet. Great for baking. $20.75 per case.
