SUMMERTIME II

Del Rio Botanicals is midway through its second season of growing vegetables and herbs exclusively for Produce Express. The Del Rio product list epitomizes the concept of fresh, local and seasonal produce. Suzanne Ashworth, the owner, and her crew harvest and deliver to our warehouse five days a week. Restaurants often receive Del Rio produce on the same day of picking. Suzanne’s extensive knowlegde of varietal seeds results in an impresssive array of items avaialble to our customers. Del Rio is currently featuring classic summertime produce- Mixed Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes, Baby and “Teenage” Squash Mixes, three types of Basil and Squash Bloosoms. If you wish to be included in our weekly fax list, please contact the office. The history of our relationship with Del Rio can be found on the Del Rio link on the left..
Heirloom Tomatoes -Our first consecutive days of 100 degree heat will benefit the local tomato crop. Tomato plants are most productive when the nights, as well as days, remain warm. Throughout June and July, warm days and cool nights resulted in rapid growth of plants and early fruit. The current heat wave has caused an increase in supply and we will be lowering the price of our Heirloom Tomatoes. Single Heirloom varieties are now available for $17.75 for a 10lb. case. Varieties include Brandywine, Green Zebra, Marvel Stripe, Lemon Boy,
Golden Jubilee, Green Zebra and Black Prince. Toy Box Heirlooms- mixed varieties- $18.75 per 10lb. case .
Figs-Black Mission Figs have returned to the market. Fig trees
produce an early crop in June, then take a month off. This ‘second
season’ runs from late July through September. Initially, the fruit will be on the small side, but only for the first few weeks. As with all seasonal fruit, maximum size and flavor occurs halfway through the season.
Mushrooms-the Morel crop is finishing which means there may be quality issues as the season concludes. Summer Chanterelles are available and show good quality. Just starting-Lobster Mushrooms from Oregon and Washington- firm with brillant orange/red color and priced less than the other wild mushrooms.
