Locally grown summer squash

With the weather getting warmer, we will be welcoming locally grown summer vegetables. The first summer crop available is a variety of squashes including: Gold Bar, Sunburst, Summer, Grey, Ron de Nice, Italian, and Yellow Crook Neck. Please keep in mind that locally grown summer squash is extremely limited this season due to labor restraints and unpredictable weather.

Both Italian and Yellow Squash are grown by Maciel Farm, a family owned farm located in Gridley, CA. Danny Maciel Sr., the father of the Maciel family, has been farming for over 25 years in Mexico. In 2010, he and his family set out on a quest to begin farming in California. The farm is a total of 20 acres with their squash crops consuming roughly seven acres of the land. Italian and Yellow Squash are both available by the 22 pound case and by the pound.

Gold Bar, Sunburst, Summer, Grey, and Ron de Nice are extremely limited and will be available by the 22 pound mixed toybox case only. We are sourcing each variety from two local growers: The first is Dwelley Farms. Mark Dwelley and his family have been growing a variety of summer crops in Brentwood since the 1920’s. Dwelley Farms is fortunate to be located in a long established agricultural area in Contra Costa County. Their weather is characterized by hot days and cool nights which results in excellent growing conditions. Produce Express is able to pick up direct three times a week during the season, ensuring freshness and quality of products. The second farm we are sourcing a variety of squash from is Castaneda Brothers. Castaneda is a 40 acre farm in Vacaville. Silverio Castaneda founded Castaneda Brothers Produce in 1978.

Polestar Farm is a 12-acre property nestled in the Capay region of Northern California, just east of Lake Berryessa. They are a new, family-owned, organic operation. Riverdog Farm is a 450-acre certified organic, diversified family farm that grows vegetables, fruit, nuts, and raises chickens and pigs. Full Belly was founded in 1985 and is certified organic. With help from about 80 employees, the farm produces an amazing diversity of vegetables, herbs, nuts, flowers, and fruits year-round. The farm also has a flock of chickens and sheep, a tribe of goats, and several cows.

cyPress grove cheese

Cypress Grove is home to an 18-acre creamery in Humboldt County. They work with an expert nutritionist to help source the best feed and diet for their animals. They take great care for their goats and it has paid off. Cypress Grove’s goats produce more milk per head than any other commercial dairy in the U.S. We offer the following:

Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog
This goat’s milk cheese has a subtle, tangy flavor and distinctive layer of edible vegetable ash. You'll enjoy buttermilk and fresh cream, complemented with floral notes, herbal overtones, and a clean citrus finish. 5# wheel
Cypress Grove Lamb Chopper
Aged three months, Lamb Chopper is Cypress Grove’s only sheep’s milk cheese. It has a buttery color and smooth texture. Pairs beautifully with sautéed mushrooms and polenta or shaved over a salad or pasta. 9# wheel
Cypress Grove Midnight Moon
Aged six months or more, this blushing, ivory-colored cheese is nutty and brown buttery up front with a long caramel finish. As it ages, protein crystals form adding a slight crunch to the otherwise dense and smooth cheese. Serve with fig jam or add as a decadent addition to macaroni and cheese. 10# wheel
Cypress Grove Purple Haze
Chevre disc blended with lavender and hand-harvested wild fennel pollen. Its deliciously distinct flavor makes a great addition to cheese boards, stuffed into pitted Medjool dates, or crumbled on a salad. 12/4oz discs in a 3# case
