citrus rows vertical mc 300X300Melogolds– A cross between a Pummelo and a White Grapefruit, this fruit has a very thick rind, yellowish-green pebbly skin, and pale yellow flesh that is sweet-tart in flavor. Almost seedless and very juicy, this delightful fruit can stand on its own, and is great in salads. Melogolds are only available for a few months throughout the year from Twin Peaks Orchard in a 25# case.

Cara Cara Oranges– A type of navel orange, crossed with a ruby red grapefruit. It has a distinctive pinkish red flesh that is characterized by a sweet cranberry-like flavor; seedless, tender and extremely juicy with bright citrus aromatics. It is a great juicing orange for cocktails/beverages. It is also delicious eaten out of hand or in salads, marmalades, jams, compotes, and syrups. 20# case.

Satsuma Mandarins– A seedless, easy to peel mandarin with rich, tart-sweet flavor. Available by the 25# case and pound. Please note that Satsumas from Twin Peaks and Mandarin Hill have finished for the season.

Meyer Lemons– A cross between a lemon and a mandarin. The Meyer is smaller and rounder than a regular lemon with smooth skin. Its flavor is as distinct as the flesh; much less acidic, making them sweeter than other varieties. Available in a 10# case or by the pound.
Mandarinquats- The mandarinquat is a hybrid of the mandarin and the kumquat. Like kumquats, they can be eaten whole (including the peel), however they’re larger with crunchier skin. They also tend to have many small seeds. Raw, they can be eaten as a snack, sliced and used in salads, or paired with cheese. Cooked, they are delicious in sauces, purees, and preserves. Available from Twin Peaks by the 14# case.

Moro Blood Oranges- Less acidic than other oranges, Blood Oranges have a complex flavor- juicy, sweet/tart and rich with a hint of raspberry. Their unique dark flesh comes from the presence of anthocyanin, a natural pigment common to red fruit and flowers, but usually uncommon to citrus fruits. The level of coloration depends on light, temperature and variety. Available from Twin Peaks Orchards by the 25# case or by the pound.

Twin Peaks Orchards Farm Tour

twin peaks tour 300X300Our first farm tour of 2020 is quickly approaching! We will be heading out to Twin Peaks Orchards in Newcastle on Monday, January 20th. With citrus season in full swing, the farm is bursting with bright, seasonal fruit all around. After our tour of exploring the orchards and groves, there will be a fun mocktail class featuring Twin Peaks citrus. To finish the day, Chef Tyler Bond will be preparing a wonderful lunch for all who are attending. The tour is expected to leave at 9am and will return by 2pm.

Twin Peaks Orchards was established in 1912 and has been family owned and operated for more than 100 years. They are a fifth generation family farm which supplies Produce Express with a variety of exceptional fruit. The warm days and cool nights of the spring/summer months result in firm Peaches, Nectarines, Plums, and Apricots with beautiful color and high sugar content. As the seasons change, the cooler climate, and sometimes near freezing temperatures, is ideal for growing Persimmons, Satsuma Mandarins, Blood Oranges, and Grapefruit in the winter months.

j. Marchini Farms

The Marchini family grows several varieties of Italian specialty vegetables, including multiple varieties of chicories. Chicories are a closely related group of leafy vegetables that exhibit a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and textures. Chicories are quite versatile and may be used in any manner of culinary techniques. They are excellent raw in salads, and have a sturdy texture that is great for both braising and grilling. We are pleased to offer the following varieties from J. Marchini Farms (LeGrand, CA):

NEW Rosa Radicchio- This gorgeous pink chicory is mild in flavor with sweet, slightly bitter notes. The leaves are delicate and soft, and vary in color from blush pink to light magenta. Use this beautiful chicory to elevate chicory salads, pizzas, pastas, or grill it as an appetizer or side dish. Available in an 8ct case.

Radicchio– Globe shaped, similar looking to a small head of red lettuce or cabbage with a distinctive bitter flavor. 12 count case or by the each.

Bianco Radicchio– Similar to traditional red radicchio, Bianco has a green leaf and white stems. 12 count case only.

Verona Radicchio– A traditionally red/ purple radicchio with an elongated egg shape. 12 count case only.

Treviso Radicchio– A radicchio with romaine shaped heads of red and white. 12 count case only.

Castelfranco– Seasonal variety with the mildest flavor of all the chicories. Individual heads with attractive purple red flecked, creamy white leaves. 12 count case only.

Puntarelle– Puntarelle has an elongated shape, light green stems, and dandelion shaped leaves. It also has a pleasantly bitter taste, characteristic of chicories. 12 count case only.

Mixed Chicory– A “Toy-Box” of Treviso, Castelfranco, and Radicchio. 12 count case only.

Fennel– The fennel bulb’s texture is similar to celery and can be thinly sliced and roasted, sautéed or boiled. The fronds can be minced and added to dishes the way you would use a fresh herb, making this root vegetable nearly entirely edible. Fennel is slightly sweet with a hint of black licorice. Sold by the 12 count case or by the piece.
